Open Source Electronic Health Record Software: A Blueprint for Innovation in Government and Beyond
The U.S Department of Veterans Affairs has taken an unprecedented step to enable innovation by not only making a significant body of health care software open source, but by launching OSEHRA, an independent open source foundation around which a community of developers, partners, customers and competitors can collaborate in its development and use. Launched less than one year ago, OSEHRA is building an open source ecosystem based on electronic health record software and other health care IT tools to help drive innovation and standardization is this fragmented industry.
With an introduction by Olliance Group's Founder and Managing partner Andrew Aitken, Mike O'Neill, VA's representative on OSEHRA's board of directors, discusses OSEHRA's genesis and objectives covering:
- The rationale for a government agency to form an open source foundation.
- The benefit of open source electronic health record software to VA, government, and the health care industry.
- Challenges and opportunities for the open source industry to participate in the health care sector.
