OSS Revolutionizing Automotive Supply Chains
A revolution is underway in the automotive industry – and no, it’s not only about hybrids, electric vehicles, batteries or improving the efficiency of the internal combustion engine. What’s driving change is software, and taking center stage is open source software (OSS), fusing automotive, IT
and software development companies into agile development communities.
This paper looks at the new automotive digital ecosystem that has resulted from recent industry shifts; lead by the consumerization of automotive technology which has transformed cost structures, value chains, and shifted the basis of competition. It looks at the compelling reasons behind the formation of the GENIVI® Alliance, the importance of GENIVI platforms, and the challenges – and opportunities – of developing in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems on top of the open software stack. As with any OSS-based offering, there are a few
challenges to consider. Governance and compliance with licensing and IP issues inherent in the choice of open source code are among
key considerations. This document reviews these considerations and presents recommendations for managing the use of OSS across emerging automotive software supply chains.
